Port Louis - The Citadel

Writer's picture: DiscoverMauritiusDiscoverMauritius

Right in the centre of Port Louis, built on a hill, you can find the Citadel, a fort overlooking the capital. It was built in the 19th century for protection, which the old cannons represent, but is nowadays an attraction for everybody wanting to enjoy the view over Port Louis. You can easily reach it walking up the hill from the city centre (in around 15 mins) or else take a taxi to drive you all the way. There is no entrance fee but a toilet and a small shop. You can walk all around the fort to get an overview of the whole city with the harbour on the one and the Moka mountains on the other side. Besides the houses of Port Louis, you also get a nice view of the racecourse Champ de Mars, that is the oldest one in the southern hemisphere and an important public place for the city. All in all, there is not too much to experience, but the views and the amazing photos you can take are worth the short walk.
