A visit to the Château de Labourdonnais is an immersion into 19th century colonial Mauritian architecture. Built in 1856, the domain served as a home for the Wiehe family for 150 years, until it was extensively refurbished in 2006. Nowadays it is amongst Mauritius’ foremost cultural and historic attractions. However, the area is not solely known for the graceful architecture of the Château, but visitors are further attracted by the beautiful gardens and orchards that surround it.
Included in the entrance fee for this romantic destination is a juice and rum tasting, both of which products are freshly produced on site. Visitors can enjoy the taste of two different in-house rum brands (an additional price is charged for one of them). Flavors reach from rather extraordinary ones, such as “ginger” and “lemongrass” to more common, yet very intensive flavors, such as “coffee”, “vanilla” or “spiced”. In case one doesn’t enjoy tasting rums as much, juice will be served instead.
After a plentiful stay, visitors can stock up on local delicacies and souvenirs at the shop and restaurant, both situated only a few steps away from the Château de Labourdonnais.
